Call for applications for CMU-Portugal dual-degree Ph.D. scholarships

The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and the NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics (NOVA-LINCS) at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa have joint PhD openings in the area of Language Technologies/Computer Science. The student will receive a dual degree through the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal) and spend at least two years at LTI/CMU and at least two years at NOVA-LINCS/NOVA. The scholarship consists of a tuition grant and stipend support.

The student’s research will focus on the development of serious games and algorithms for speech therapy or other areas of interest for the BioVisualSpeech project, which include signal processing algorithms and machine learning algorithms for speech and other signals (image). This scholarship is offered in the context of the BioVisualSpeech project.

EXPO FCT, 2017

EXPO FCT is an open house day at FCT/UNL in which high school students from all over the country come to visit the university. Each department offers a set of activities, which consist of demonstrations of the work developed at the university. BioVisualSpeech was one of the activities offered at the Dep. of Computer Science.

Best Poster Award - ACE, Nov 2016

Marta Lopes work "A voice-controlled serious game for the sustained vowel exercise" received the Best Poster Award at the International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology, Osaka, Japan.

iTF - 3rd Speech Therapy Symposium/III Simpósio de Terapia da Fala, Nov 2016

The team members Margarida Grilo and Isabel Guimarães were part of the organizing committee for the 3rd Speech Therapy Symposium, with the theme "The new technologies in speech therapy". The symposium's goal was to discuss the impact of the technologic evolution in therapy intervention and future diagnosis.

The following presentations and demonstrations were given by the team members Carla Viegas, Marta Lopes and Ivo Anjos:

  • Carla Viegas presented "Intelligent personal assistantes: How na IPA could improve your workflow as a speech therapist".
  • Marta Lopes presented "A voice-controlled serious game for the sustained vowel exercise" and demonstrated her work at the TECH Market show.
  • Ivo Anjos demonstrated his work on "Intensive therapy: games for training fricative consonants at home" at the TECH Market show.

Three team members, João Magalhães, Mariana Diogo and Ricardo Carrapiço participated in the World Student Meeting on Speech and Language Therapy, Leiria, Portugal, 6-8 July 2015. The two following presentations were given:
